Gripple Lockable | Screw-Locking Wire Rope Fastener, No.3 - No.6
The Lockable Gripple is the original locking version of the Gripple wire rope fastener, covering wire rope from 2 mm to 6 mm across four sizes. Rope is pushed through one channel, looped around the anchor point and returned through the second; the internal wedges grip it as the line is tensioned. Two integral locking screws are then tightened down onto the wedges, clamping them in position so they cannot move. The termination is fixed rather than merely held. Sold as single units.

Why use a Lockable Gripple?
On a static and/or indoor run an ordinary Gripple is enough. Outdoors or on anything that moves, what loosens a termination is rarely the load - it is the movement: wind gallop on an exposed catenary, vibration carried down a bracing wire, thermal cycling on a long span. The locking screws take that out of the equation, and because the wedges are held mechanically the fastener works on steel core and fibre core rope alike. The second reason is practical: a screwed termination can be slackened, re-set and re-tightened rather than cut off and replaced. Best practice is to fit a thimble at each termination.
Where is the Lockable Gripple used?
Overhead catenary wire, carnival and promenade lighting, aerial bracing, marquee, shade cloth and tree bracing, exhibition hall displays and extraction duct bracing - work where the wire is exposed and moving. How to use?
The Lockable Gripple has two channels and fits by hand. No tool is needed to make the termination; a tensioning tool is only needed to pull a long span up to tension.

Pass a length of wire rope through one of the two channels.

Loop the rope around the anchor point, or around any suitable bracing point.

Return it through the other channel, pulling at least 75 mm (3") of rope through. Pull on the load-bearing section and the Lockable locks tight.

Tension the line. The internal wedges bite harder as the load comes on - this is what carries the load.

Lock it by tightening both inserted screws down onto the wedges, to a firm, solid, steady stop.
The locking screws take a hex socket, so a socket wrench, a nut driver or a socket bit in a screwdriver handle all work - and a socket bit in a cordless driver is quicker again. Check the socket size on the fastener in front of you; it is not the same across the range. Best practice is to fit a thimble at each termination so the rope is not bent around a bare anchor.
🔑 Releasing and re-adjustingA Gripple is one-way by design: rope goes in, rope does not come back. To let the rope run back out - to drop a run to its final height, correct a line pulled too tight, or recover the fastener for re-use - you need the matching Gripple key: the
Flag Key for No.3, or the
Setting Key for No.4 - No.6.

WLL is the load along the axis of the rope. In catenary use the rope tension is higher than the load being carried and rises sharply as sag is reduced, so calculate tension from span and sag rather than reading the load directly from that column.
